Together with a partner (name not disclosed at this time), Magle is developing a new type of DSM to serve an increasing demand for efficient and safe products for embolization therapy. Magle’s CEO comments: “We see a growing activity in this market and a trend towards more frequent use of embolic material in for example minimally invasive treatment of liver tumours and uterine fibroids. We identified this field early on as a great opportunity for expansion and where we feel our products really can make a difference in the market.” Magle’s CSO comments: “Combining our core DSM know-how and technology with our partner’s great insight in this market and ideas on valuable product characteristics, we are sure we can bring something entirely new to this field.”

With the growing pipeline of projects and increased collaboration with our partners, Magle is proud to announce the recruitment of 3 new Research Scientists to our R&D group in Kristianstad. The new employees come directly from equivalent positions at Astra Zeneca in Lund. Magle’s CEO comments: “It is of course very sad that Astra Zeneca is shutting down its facilities in Lund, but at the same time this creates a great opportunity for other companies in the area to attract highly skilled professionals. All three have played important roles in their groups at Astra and they all come highly recommended by both colleagues and former superiors. Just as importantly, they have already proven that they fit well within the group. Maintaining good group dynamics and the positive working atmosphere in Magle is a valued asset we will safeguard as we expand the company further. We are very happy to have the three on board and certain they will add value to our core technology...

Magle’s newest addition to the Phadebas® family of products is the Phadebas Honey Diastase Test (PHDT). Intended for determination of α-amylase (diastase) activity in honey samples, PHDT fits the method described and recommended by the International Honey Commission (IHC). To meet the demand from honey analysing labs, Magle has developed PHDT, a product that mimics the behaviour of the batch used in the original IHC study. The result is a product with very narrow specifications wherein all batches of PHDT will behave alike and adhere to the set of equations in the IHC guidelines. PHDT does not come with a standard curve but only a leaflet with instructions for use including the IHC guidelines. To simplify the use, a table for instant activity reading is provided. PHDT is a highly cost effective alternative to the Schade method, offering better precision; improved selectivity; fewer reagents and steps and a decreased labour time.Magle expects the new product to take...

In support of Magle’s development of new and advanced products for wound healing, the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems, VINNOVA, has granted Magle a 2 MSEK funding. Since 2007, Magle has collaborated with research groups in Swedish Universities to better understand the complexity of the wound healing processes. To support and confirm our suppositions, in-vitro cell models and animal studies have been conducted. The results from these collaborations are very promising which is why we are now stepping up our efforts to develop novel DSM wound healing products able to accelerate healing, reduce pain and secure wound closing with less scarring. The project will have a certain emphasis on Negative Pressure Wound Therapy as this is a rapidly emerging field in wound therapy and that DSM material seems especially useful under negative pressure as a wound contact layer.

LUND and MINNEAPOLIS - Magle announced today that it has signed a long-term raw material supply agreement with our partner Medafor, Inc. Magle manufactures and supplies to Medafor degradable starch microspheres (DSM-A) specified and tailor made to achieve rapid hemostasis in the human body. The material is a key component for Medafor’s patented MPH® surgical product, which is used by surgeons to control bleeding in complex surgical operations. Gary Shope, CEO of Medafor, said, “Magle is an important partner in the ongoing development of our unique hemostatic product, and we are delighted to continue our relationship with them. This agreement ensures that Medafor will have a quality supply from a strong, reliable partner as we further our global growth strategy and continue providing this valuable technology to surgeons, hospitals and patients all over the world.”Under the agreement, Magle will continue to exclusively supply Medafor with the DSM-A product for...

Magle acquires the rights to Spherex® from Pfizer Magle has recently acquired all rights, outside Japan, to the product and trade name Spherex® from Pfizer. The supply of Spherex to the Japanese market will still be retained by Pfizer. Spherex is a degradable starch microsphere (DSM-S) specified to induce vessel occlusion, thereby causing temporary restriction in blood flow to an organ. The product is used in the treatment of primary and secondary liver tumors, where it is co-administered with cytotoxic drugs via a catheter into the hepatic artery. The technique is used as a first line therapy and most commonly referred to as Transarterial Chemoembolisation (TACE). By temporarily occluding the liver artery, the cytotoxic drug is given time to act locally under a prolonged time, thus reducing systemic side effects while maintaining a high local dose of the drug. In the blood stream, Spherex is degraded by serum -amylases and the blood flow is fully restored within 60...

Arista® receives marketing approval in Japan Magle's partner Medafor, Inc has together with the Japanese distributor been granted regulatory approval for Arista® in Japan. Following the successful introduction and rapidly growing sales in the U.S. and EU markets, Arista is thereby accessing the 3rd largest global market. Being completely free from components of animal or human origin is a unique feature of Arista, and is expected to be a major leverage for rapid uptake by Japanese healthcare professionals. With the risk of transmittable diseases, such as BSE, Japanese authoritities are known to maintain a very restrictive attitude toward products containing material of animal origin. Magle supplies the U.S. partner in the hemostatic field, Medafor, Inc, with the active component of Arista, viz a degradable starch microsphere (DSM-A) specified and tailor made to achieve rapid hemostasis in the human body and to be completely degraded and absorbed within 48 hours.

Magle has entered a collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology to explore some of the fundamentals of wound healing mechanisms. Dr Sten Peter Apell, professor at the department of Physics is researching ways to theoretically model the complex wound healing processes. What Dr Apell relates to as "wound healing in silico" has the potential to become a valuable tool for the life science companies striving for a better understanding of the underlying wound chemistry and physics and serve as an aid for future product development. Dr Apell has in earlier work showed that migration of fibroblast cells is influenced by physical parameters such as electric fields and temperatures. Magle's own research has shown that the DSM material exhibits some very interesting properties that may make it a very potent matrix for wound treatment, especially for the early and late stages of the wound healing process. The collaboration with Chalmers is a good opportunity for Magle...

For Magle this is both an important acknowledgment and a valuable asset with respect to the possibility to increased dialogue with the regulatory bodies and ultimately to bring products to the market faster with decreased up-front investment.

Magle has entered into a collaboration agreement with a major player in the life science sector. The company, that wishes to remain undisclosed at this time, intends to combine Magle's DSM technology with its own proprietary technology, to create the basis for a new product platform. A joint project group has been established between the companies and development work will take place on both ends. The goal is to introduce the first product to the market in early 2010.

Magle has established collaboration with the national Swedish Crime Lab (SKL) on the development of a new and faster test for the identification of saliva deposits. Among the many biological traces in forensics, saliva is known to be one of the most difficult to locate and identify. In for example sexual assault cases, presence of the assailant's saliva may become critical technical evidence. In many cases, DNA can be extracted from these saliva deposits, hence creating a link between the perpetrator and the victim as well as corroborating a chain of events. Available products for this type of identification is often labour intensive and in some cases even not reliable. Magle markets the Phadebas® Forensic as a tool to localise hidden saliva stains on for example clothing. On the other hand, in situations where you know where to look for potential saliva, e.g., on bottle necks and balaclavas, there's a need for a fast and presumptive test. At the American Association of Forensic Sciences' meeting in February, Magle introduced a novelty for the mapping of forensic evidence. Based on a sensitive α-amylase detection, this new product, Phadebas® Forensic, is capable of picking up traces of saliva on basically any type of surface. The product is a filter paper covered on one side with Phadebas reagent and it's used to map casework items to locate and distinguish saliva from other body fluids. Today's routine practice for mapping body fluids is by using a variable UV source to scan the item. However, it's also well known that saliva is notoriously hard to find under UV light, as these stains don't naturally fluoresce. Success will therefore depend on the type and color of surface under investigation. A recent study has shown that as many as 40% of saliva stains on garments go undetected under UV light. With Phadebas Forensic however, if there's saliva on the investigated exhibit it will be found. Since the...

The Arista product manufactured by Magle Life Sciences has been granted marketing approval from the US FDA. This means that Arista can now be marketed as an hemostasis device in connection with most types of surgical intervention in the US. "USA is the no. 1 market in the world for this type of products and it is of course a very important milestone for us to be present there with our technology", says Arne Nordström, President of Magle Life Sciences and continues to say "Our goal is to establish a internationally leading position in the field of medicated polysaccharide technologies. With the US approval in hand we will now start the registration procedure in Japan and hopefully receive an approval there during 2007".
